Kendo is a Japanese martial art and modern sport. The name literally means “The way of sword”. Its modern form developed from the combat skills practiced by the Japanese warrior class, samurai. The central premise of Kendo is fighting against a similarly armed opponent. Thus, Kendo focuses on developing the skills and strategies needed to deal with a sword-bearing opponent.

Midwest Kendo Federation mission statement: Our mission in the MWKF is to promote fellowship and friendship through sharing kendo with others. Our goal is to improve our own character, and refine our body, spirit, and mind. We seek to guide others toward right action, and never do harm to anyone or anything. We will revere and appreciate those who have given us the benefits of their knowledge and abilities. We will avoid seeking self-glory, and strive toward humility. The profit we seek from kendo is only the value of its teachings through tireless practice, and the resoluteness to deal promptly and appropriately with life’s tragedies and triumphs.
